Broken links and meta tags
Dead links and missing tags, found on a schedule
A page can be up and still be broken: a link to a product that was deleted, a relaunch that lost its meta description, a template that stopped setting the share image. Nobody goes looking for those. UptimeWarrior reads the page you monitor on a schedule and lists what it finds.
Up to 50 links
Followed on the page you monitor, with a rejection confirmed by a second request before it is called broken.
Five tags
Title, description, social image, mobile viewport and charset.
On every plan
Scanned weekly on Free; every 12h on Pro; every 6h on Agency.
01 / how
What the scan reads
Broken links
on your plan cadenceThe page is read and the first 50 of its links, in page order, are requested, confirming any rejection with a second request before calling it broken. A 404, a 410, another 4xx or any 5xx is broken. A server that turns our request away is reported as could not check instead, and the dashboard says how many of the page's links were followed out of how many it holds.
Meta tags
on your plan cadenceTitle, description, social image, mobile viewport and charset. They are read from the page the uptime check already fetched, so the page is not fetched a second time.
Where it shows
as of the last scanOn the site's page in the dashboard, and in the weekly report on Pro and up. Nothing is sent when a link breaks, since a dead link is rarely urgent enough to wake anyone for.
02 / try it
Run it once, without an account
The free check runs the same link and tag scan once, on any site you own, and follows up to 25 links. Nothing is stored and there is no page left behind making claims about the site.
questions
Questions
Does it crawl my whole site?
No. It reads the page at the address you monitor and follows up to 50 of the links on it. To cover another page, monitor that address as well; it counts as a site.
Will a broken link send me an alert?
No. Broken links and missing tags are listed on the dashboard and in the weekly report on Pro and up, as of the last scan. Alerts are for an outage, its recovery, and a certificate or domain close to expiry.
Why is a link marked "could not check" instead of broken?
Because the server refused us rather than saying the page is gone. A 401, 403, 429 or 451 is a site declining to talk to a bot, which says nothing about whether the link works, so it is not counted as broken.
Which meta tags are checked?
The title, the meta description, the social share image (og:image), the mobile viewport and the character set, each reported when it is missing.
How often does the scan run?
Weekly on Free; every 12h on Pro; every 6h on Agency. A scan that could not complete is tried again sooner, and between scans the last result is shown.
