From the registry, not a lookup site
The date that decides when a domain lapses is the registry's. So that is who we ask.
The registered domain
The address is reduced to the domain that was registered, so a subdomain or a path makes no difference.
RDAP first
The registry's own RDAP server, found through the directory IANA publishes. One format for every registry that offers it.
WHOIS behind it
Asked where a registry has no RDAP service, or gives no expiry date through it. Some registries publish no expiry date at all, and the result says so rather than leaving a blank.

What it cannot tell you
An expiry date is a fact about the registration, not about whether it will be renewed.
- Whether auto-renew is switched on at the registrar, or whether the card on file still works.
- An expiry date for domains under registries that do not publish one (.nl, .de, .be, .at and .ch among them).
- Who owns the domain: no contact details are shown.
- Anything about DNS, such as whether the domain still points at the right server.

How do I find out when a domain name expires?
Enter the domain, or any address on the site, in the form on this page. We ask the registry that holds the domain, and the result gives the expiry date, the days left and the registrar.
Fewer than 30 days left is marked as something to look at: a registration that lapses takes the website and its email with it.
Where does the domain expiry date come from?
From the registry that holds the domain itself. We ask it over RDAP, at the server listed in the public directory IANA publishes, and over WHOIS where a registry offers no RDAP service or no date through it. No third-party lookup service is involved.
Which part of the address does the domain checker look up?
Only the registered domain. A path or a subdomain makes no difference: https://blog.example.co.uk/about is looked up as example.co.uk.
Can I get a reminder before a domain registration lapses?
Yes, on Pro and up, by monitoring the site. The domain is looked up every 6h, and a reminder goes out 30, 14, 7, 3 and 1 days before it expires.
